Favorite Stays in ESSAOUIRA 🫶🏼

Essaouira has a way of slowing you down without asking permission.
The light, the wind, the rhythm of the ocean against the Skala — it’s a place that gently shifts your pace and sharpens your senses. I’ve returned many times over the years, sometimes to work, sometimes to rest, often for a bit of both. And with every visit, I seem to add one more address to my mental list of places that feel right.

This is not a list of the “best” places to stay in the traditional sense. It’s a personal selection — addresses I’ve slept in, lingered in, returned to, or simply love to visit for their atmosphere, views or rooftop moments.
From quiet riads that feel like a soft landing, to more vibrant, social spots and even a budget-friendly gem with serious character — these are places that each reflect a different side of Essaouira.

Whether you’re coming for slow mornings, creative inspiration, ocean air or sunset drinks, I hope this guide helps you find the place that fits your rhythm.

RIAD BIANCA

9 Rue Zallaqa, Medina van Essaouira, 44000, Essaouira, Marokko

Riad Bianca is the quiet, gentle counterbalance to Essaouira’s vibrant energy.

Tucked away slightly further from the harbour, towards the outer medina walls, it feels calm and secluded while still being perfectly central. Everything here is light, white and natural — an atmosphere that invites you to slow down the moment you arrive.

Run by a young, charming couple with a focus on wellbeing, yoga and a healthy lifestyle (very loved by kiters), this riad is less about views and more about feeling at home.
Think soft mornings, nourishing breakfasts, warm conversations and a sense of ease that makes you want to stay just a little longer.

RIAD LYON MOGADOR

39 Rue Ceuta Médina , Medina van Essaouira, 44000, Essaouira, Marokko

Riad Lyon Mogador combines a calm, natural aesthetic with one of the most beautiful terraces in Essaouira.

Like Riad Bianca, its interiors are light, white and grounded in natural materials — but on a larger scale, and closer to the ocean. The real highlight here is the rooftop: wide open, serene, and offering sweeping views over the medina rooftops and the Atlantic beyond. Mornings feel expansive, evenings slow and contemplative, with sunsets that quietly steal the show.

This is a place where space, light and horizon come together — ideal if views and a sense of openness matter most to you.

SALUT MAROC

Rue Ibn Rochd, Kasbah, 44000, Essaouira, Marokko

If there is one place in Essaouira that captures the city’s creative, free-spirited soul, it’s Salut Maroc. Perched right on the edge of the medina with uninterrupted views over the Atlantic, this iconic house is an explosion of colour, pattern and personality.

Even if you don’t stay the night, it’s an absolute must-visit. The rooftop restaurant alone is reason enough to come back again and again — vibrant tiles underfoot, the sound of the ocean below, seagulls in the sky and one of the best views in town. I’ve slept here before and I always return, whether for breakfast, lunch or sunset drinks. For the atmosphere, the joy, the colours and the feeling that this place is Essaouira.

VILLA DE L'O

3 Rue Mohamed Ben Messaoud, Ahl Agadir, 44000, Essaouira, Marokko

Villa de l’Ô sits right against the old city walls, opening up to sweeping views over the harbour, the Atlantic and the lively beach promenade.

This is a place with presence — colonial chic, dark woods, leather, and a sense of faded elegance that tells stories of another era.
The atmosphere is moody and cinematic rather than light and airy, with interiors that feel rich, layered and slightly timeworn.

It’s not about minimalist calm here, but about character and nostalgia: sunset light spilling in, the sound of the sea just beyond the walls, and the feeling of staying somewhere that has lived a life.

Villa de l’Ô is ideal for travellers drawn to views, history and a certain old-world charm — a stay that feels more like stepping into a film set than retreating into a cocoon.

VILLA GARANCE

10, Rue A. Eddakhil, Medina van Essaouira, 44000, Essaouira, Marokko

Villa Garance is a riad where authenticity and comfort coexist effortlessly.

Traditional architecture, warm materials, and thoughtful details create a sense of place that feels both genuine and refined. The rooms are generous, the patios inviting, and the multiple terraces offer space to relax at any moment of the day — whether in full sun or gentle shade.

Its central location in the medina makes it an ideal base, while the atmosphere inside remains calm and grounding.

A riad for travellers who appreciate character, comfort, and the luxury of time.

RIAD DE LA MER

7-9, Rue Khalid Ben Oualid, Kasbah, 44000, Essaouira, Marokko

Riad de la Mer is one of those places that doesn’t try to impress — and that’s exactly its strength.

More basic than some of the other riads on this list, but incredibly authentic. White walls, traditional tiled floors, and a layout that feels practical and lived-in rather than staged.

We stayed in an apartment-style floor with a kitchen, which made it ideal with kids and for longer stays. You have the freedom to settle into your own rhythm, while still being right in the heart of the medina, with the ocean just moments away.

If you’re looking for character, location, and a real sense of place — this is it.

INCREDIBLE LOFT

14 rue Arife, Kasbah, 44000, Essaouira, Marokko

The Incredible Loft at Essaouira Medina is a perfect option for travellers who love comfort and design, but still want to stay deeply connected to the city.

Fully equipped and beautifully styled, it offers two large bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a spacious living room, and a kitchen that actually invites you to use it. Everything feels thoughtful, calm and easy — ideal for longer stays or travelling with family or friends.

While there’s no private outdoor space, the location more than makes up for it. Step outside and you’re immediately immersed in Essaouira’s rhythm, with the ocean, ramparts and medina life right at your feet.

A stay where the city itself becomes an extension of your home.

LE PALAZZO

Avenue Oqba Ibn Nafiaa, Kasbah, 44000, Essaouira, Marokko

Le Palazzo is a different experience altogether. Less riad, more hotel — housed in a beautifully restored, palace-like building that feels grand yet surprisingly relaxed.

The interiors lean into Essaouira’s signature palette of soft blues, emerald greens and sun-washed neutrals, giving the place a fresh, contemporary feel while still honouring its historic bones. Spacious rooms, generous common areas and a sense of openness make it ideal if you like comfort with character.

But the real star here is the rooftop: expansive, breezy, and made for long lunches, late-afternoon drinks and unforgettable sunsets over the medina and the ocean beyond. Even if you don’t stay the night,

Le Palazzo is absolutely worth a visit — for the views alone, but also for the effortless blend of modern elegance and Essaouira soul.

LA SMALA HOSTEL

26 bis, Rue Skala, Kasbah, 44000, Essaouira, Marokko

La Smala Hostel proves that traveling on a budget doesn’t mean compromising on style, location or atmosphere.

Set right on the Skala, with stunning views over the ocean and the medina walls, this place has a bold, creative energy that immediately sets it apart.
Think funky murals, playful design details and a slightly rebellious edge — youthful, social and full of life.

It offers different formulas, from dorms for solo travelers to more private rooms, making it accessible for many travel styles.

And yes, once again, the rooftop steals the show: perfect for sunset drinks, easy bites and meeting fellow travelers while watching the Atlantic roll in. Even if you’re staying elsewhere, La Smala is absolutely worth a stop.

What all these places have in common isn’t luxury or price point — it’s a sense of soul. Each one offers a different way of experiencing Essaouira: inward or outward, calm or social, intimate or expansive. And that’s exactly what I love about this city — it meets you where you are.

Some of these addresses are perfect to stay the night, others are just as memorable for a long lunch, a rooftop drink or a sunset pause. My advice? Mix and match. Choose your base, but don’t hesitate to wander, climb a few staircases, and let the rooftops do the rest.

And if you have a favourite place in Essaouira that I haven’t mentioned yet — I’m always curious to discover more. This city has a way of revealing new layers, every single time.

Until next time,
Essaouira 🤍
