SOUK in the CITY
NASSIJ Upcycled Cushions | 45 × 60 cm
Made from an original vintage Moroccan couverture. Each cushion is individually cut and handmade, so stripe placement, texture and small irregularities may vary. Limited production.
Two vintage textiles. Completely different textures. One rather lovely combination.
NASSIJ started with two finds at the Marrakech criée.
The first was a light Moroccan Boucherouite-kilim textile, full of texture, with loose threads in faded blue, burgundy, grey and earthy shades running across an off-white background.
The second couldn't have been more different: a beautifully woven wine-red couverture, with fine stripes in muted pink, ochre and soft neutral tones.
We brought both textiles to our maâlems Boujma and Ayoub in Marrakech, with the idea of giving them a new purpose.
And that's how NASSIJ came together.
TWO TEXTILES, DIFFERENT CHARACTERS
What makes this collection interesting is the contrast.
The off-white textile has a wonderfully irregular, almost shaggy surface. Small loops, frayed threads and variations in the weaving give it plenty of depth.
The burgundy couverture, on the other hand, is flatter and more structured, with delicate stripes that bring a little warmth and colour into the mix.
Some cushions combine both materials, allowing the two textures to play against each other. Others are made entirely from the lighter Boucherouite-kilim textile, giving them a more understated look.
They belong to the same collection, but each cushion has its own character.
FROM THE CRIÉE TO THE ATELIER
Both original textiles were selected at Marrakech's traditional carpet market during our October 2026 sourcing trip.
They were cleaned locally before being repurposed into cushions by Boujma and Ayoub, the maâlems we work with in Marrakech.
The original fabrics were carefully cut and sewn into a small series, making use of the different colours, woven details and textures.
We particularly love that the slightly unconventional nature of the original textiles remains visible in the finished pieces.
That's part of the appeal of working with vintage materials.
A LITTLE TEXTURE GOES A LONG WAY
At approximately 45 × 60 cm, NASSIJ works beautifully as a rectangular accent cushion on a sofa, armchair or bed.
The lighter versions are particularly easy to combine with natural linen, wood and other earthy textures.
The mixed versions introduce a richer contrast, with the deep burgundy textile adding colour and warmth.
And because the cushions are made from existing fabrics, no two pieces need to look exactly alike.
UPCYCLED & HANDMADE
Rather than using newly manufactured fabric, NASSIJ gives two original Moroccan textiles another life.
The visible fibres, irregular loops, subtle colour differences and variations in weave are part of the materials themselves.
Each cushion is individually cut and sewn in Marrakech, preserving the character of the original textiles.

Professional textile cleaning recommended to protect the different vintage fibres and colours.
Do not machine wash. Avoid pulling on loose textile threads, particularly on the textured Boucherouite-kilim sections.
Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight.
HANDMADE CHARACTER
NASSIJ cushions are made from genuine vintage Moroccan textiles.
Visible fabric ends, irregular loops, differences in weaving, variations in texture and natural signs of age are all part of their original character.
The appearance and placement of each textile may vary between individual cushions.
