SOUK in the CITY
Boujad Rug – BASMA | ca. 150 × 100 cm
Handwoven from sheep's wool, incorporating repurposed, previously dyed yarns. This gives the rug its wonderfully rich colour palette, subtle variations and unique character.
A little colour, a little smile. Meet BASMA!
A wonderfully playful Moroccan Boujad rug with a soft creamy wool base and dozens of colourful little shapes scattered across the surface.
Some look like tiny diamonds, others like eyes, little crosses or abstract brushstrokes. Mustard yellow, turquoise, dusty pink, burgundy, faded blue, purple and black, all mixed together in the loveliest way.
There's something almost childlike about the design. Nothing perfectly aligned, no strict repetition, just a happy collection of colours and shapes.
And underneath all that colour? Beautifully thick, soft sheep's wool.
BASMA means smile in Arabic. Quite fitting, don't you think?

A LITTLE ABOUT BOUJAD RUGS
Boujad rugs originate from central Morocco, a region known for its expressive Amazigh weaving traditions.
Traditionally woven by women, these rugs are loved for their creative freedom, irregular geometric patterns and unexpected colour combinations.
Many newly made Boujads incorporate reused wool, giving previously coloured yarns a new life.
BASMA is a lovely example of this playful approach. Her little diamond and eye-like motifs recall traditional Amazigh designs, although their exact meanings can differ between weavers and communities.
We particularly love how the colourful shapes seem to float across the creamy wool, almost like a collection of little drawings.
FOUND AT THE MARRAKECH CRIÉE
BASMA was personally selected during our October 2026 sourcing trip at the Marrakech rug auction, better known as the criée.
One of our favourite places to find unusual rugs. Carpets everywhere, people calling out prices, rugs being unfolded and negotiations happening in every direction.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, us, trying to keep track of our favourites.
BASMA was one of those lovely little finds. Soft and creamy at first glance, but look closer and there's so much colour and personality hiding in those tiny motifs.
Of course, another one came home with us!
A LITTLE STOPOVER AT DAR TCHAIKANA
Before travelling to Belgium, BASMA had her photoshoot at Riad Dar Tchaikana, one of our favourite Marrakech addresses.
Laid out across the beautiful courtyard floor, surrounded by greenery, old wooden doors and a few more of our rug discoveries.
The natural daylight brought out her lovely creamy wool and all those colourful little details.
And once again, merci to the ladies of Dar Tchaikana for letting us turn their peaceful riad into our improvised rug photo studio!
SMALL RUG, PLENTY OF POSSIBILITIES
At approximately 100 × 150 cm, BASMA is lovely beside a bed, next to a vintage armchair, in a cosy reading corner or in a colourful child's room.
Her creamy background makes her easy to combine, while those playful little motifs add just the right amount of colour.
And we can definitely imagine her as a tapis tableau too. Those scattered shapes would look beautiful on a wall.
THE BEAUTY OF HANDMADE
BASMA is individually handmade from sheep's wool.
Slightly uneven edges, variations in pile height and little irregularities in the design are all part of her handmade character.
Please allow for small variations in measurements. Colours may appear slightly different depending on your screen and lighting.
One of a kind. Wonderfully woolly, a little quirky and guaranteed to bring a smile.
