Boucherouite Rug – ZAHER | ca 220 × 110 cm
An original vintage Moroccan rug, selected for its exceptional textile composition. Irregular edges, visible fabric strips, colour variations and signs of age are part of its handmade character.
ZAHER – A LITTLE PIECE OF BERBER ART
Some rugs are simply impossible to leave behind. ZAHER was one of them.
Discovered during our October sourcing trip in Marrakech, this beautiful vintage Boucherouite immediately caught my eye. The colours, the intricate details, the slightly wild texture... There is so much going on.
A rich red background, framed by deep almost-black borders, with a fascinating composition of diamonds running through the centre. Soft mint green, faded blue, warm earthy browns, little touches of yellow and unexpected flashes of colour. Every time you look at ZAHER, you discover something new.
What makes this piece particularly interesting is the combination of different weaving techniques and textures. Some areas are wonderfully shaggy and irregular, while others are flatter and more delicately worked. The result feels almost like a textile painting.
And yes, I am a little bit in love with this one.
THE ART OF BOUCHEROUITE
Boucherouite rugs are among the most expressive creations in Moroccan textile traditions.
Traditionally made from leftover fabrics, recycled clothing and various textile fibres, these rugs are wonderful examples of resourcefulness and creativity. Rather than following a perfectly calculated pattern, the weaver works with available materials, colours and personal inspiration.
ZAHER is a particularly beautiful example of this free and intuitive approach.
Its composition also recalls traditional Amazigh (Berber) weaving, where geometric forms, diamonds and abstract symbols have been used for generations.
Such motifs are often associated with themes of protection, femininity, fertility and everyday life. Their exact meanings, however, vary between regions, families and individual weavers. Without knowing the original maker, we prefer to appreciate ZAHER's symbols without pretending to know exactly what each one represents.
What we do know is that the result is wonderfully expressive.
VINTAGE, WITH CHARACTER
ZAHER is a vintage piece, not a newly produced rug made to look old.
Its irregularities, variations in pile, different textile textures and traces of previous life are all part of its charm.
Compared with some of our thicker, fluffier Boucherouites, ZAHER has a more varied and partly finer structure, giving its intricate design even more definition.
Beautiful on the floor, but equally interesting as a tapis tableau – a textile artwork displayed on the wall.
Personally sourced in Marrakech and selected for its colours, character and unusual composition.

CARE
Regularly shake out your rug and vacuum gently without a rotating brush. Spot-clean carefully with a damp cloth and mild detergent when necessary. For a thorough cleaning, we recommend a professional rug cleaner experienced with vintage Moroccan textiles.
Please remember that vintage handmade rugs are never perfectly straight or uniform. Small irregularities in shape, colour, texture and finishing are part of their character.
One of a kind. Once it's gone, it's gone.
