SOUK in the CITY
Vintage Tapis-Tableau – LAYL | ca 100 × 100 cm
An original vintage Moroccan rug, selected for its exceptional textile composition. Irregular edges, visible fabric strips, colour variations and signs of age are part of its handmade character.
A little piece of the night, woven in colour.
LAYL means night in Arabic. And somehow, that feels just right for this small, wonderfully unusual vintage Moroccan textile.
Deep midnight blues, dark petrol greens, faded purples and black form the background, interrupted by little flashes of mustard yellow, soft pink, cream and turquoise.
Look at it from a distance and you might see an abstract painting. Come closer and the whole thing changes. Layers of old textiles, little knots, uneven surfaces and strips of fabric appear, each adding its own colour and texture.
Nothing perfectly straight. Nothing quite predictable.
And that is precisely what makes LAYL so interesting.
A SMALL TEXTILE WITH AN ARTISTIC SOUL
Some vintage rugs simply feel more at home on a wall.
LAYL is one of them.
With its almost square format, dark graphic composition and beautifully irregular fringes, we see this piece as a tapis-tableau: a textile artwork to hang, admire and discover in all its little details.
It would look particularly lovely against a light wall, where the colours and rich textures can really stand out.
And unlike a framed painting, the surface has depth. The textile strips catch the light differently, the colours shift slightly depending on where you stand, and the fringes add another wonderfully imperfect dimension.
A lovely way to introduce vintage Moroccan craftsmanship into a contemporary interior.
DISCOVERED AT THE MARRAKECH CRIÉE
LAYL was personally selected at the criée berbère, Marrakech's traditional carpet auction, during our October 2026 sourcing trip.
Among the colourful piles of vintage rugs, this small piece stood out for its unusual composition and darker colour palette.
It is a beautiful example of how traditional Boucherouite weaving can become something surprisingly abstract and expressive.
The result is a unique vintage textile, full of unexpected details and handmade character.
UPCYCLED TEXTILES, HANDMADE CHARACTER
Boucherouite rugs are traditionally made using recycled materials, often strips of old clothing and leftover fabrics.
Instead of following a perfectly repeated pattern, the maker works with different colours, materials and textures, creating a composition that develops through the weaving process.
In LAYL, the contrasting textile strips form irregular shapes and layers of colour. Some sections are denser, others looser. The pile varies in height, and the edges and fringes have their own wonderfully uneven character.
These variations are part of the original handmade construction, not manufacturing defects.
Its exact fibre composition is unknown, as is often the case with vintage pieces made from mixed recycled textiles.

DISPLAY & CARE
We recommend displaying LAYL as textile wall art, using a suitable hanging system that distributes the weight evenly and supports the vintage fabric without damaging it.
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight to help preserve its colours.
Dust gently when necessary. Do not machine wash or pull on loose textile fibres.
For thorough cleaning, consult a professional experienced with vintage Moroccan textiles.
A NOTE ON VINTAGE CHARACTER
LAYL is an original handmade vintage textile, not a newly manufactured decorative piece.
Slight irregularities in shape, uneven edges, variations in colour and texture, visible fabric ends and signs of previous use are all part of its character.
Each piece is individually photographed, so the textile shown is the exact one you will receive.
One of a kind. Personally sourced in Marrakech.
