Boucherouite Rug – BAHJA | 170 × 115 cm
An original vintage Moroccan rug. Irregular edges, variations in texture and small signs of previous use are part of its authentic character. Only one available.
A dark background, a bright orange border and little bursts of colour everywhere.
BAHJA might be one of the most cheerful contrasts in our vintage Boucherouite selection.
Against a deep, almost chocolate-brown background, dozens of small, colourful diamonds appear in shades of turquoise, orange, purple, pink, yellow, green and cream. Some are bright and clearly defined; others have softened and blended into the surrounding pile over time.
The vibrant orange border brings the whole composition together. Add the wonderfully textured surface and original fringes, and you have a rather distinctive little rug.
BAHJA means joy in Arabic. A fitting name, don't you think?
FOUND AT THE MARRAKECH CRIÉE
BAHJA was selected during our October 2026 sourcing trip to Marrakech, among the vintage textiles presented at the traditional carpet auction.
After being purchased, it was professionally cleaned locally in Marrakech, preserving its original vintage texture and character, before being packed for transport to Belgium.
We particularly liked the contrast between its dark background and the playful, colourful motifs. It's the kind of rug that brings colour into a room without needing to be enormous.
HANDMADE FROM RECYCLED TEXTILES
Traditional Boucherouite rugs are made using strips and remnants of existing fabrics, often including old clothing and other recycled textiles.
BAHJA features a dense, soft-looking pile with noticeable variations in height and texture. The colourful diamond motifs have a slightly looser appearance than the dark background, creating a lovely sense of depth.
Look closely and you'll see the individual textile fibres, the irregularities in the weaving and the beautifully imperfect edges.
Its exact material composition is unknown, as is often the case with authentic vintage Boucherouite rugs.
A LITTLE COLOUR, A LOT OF CHARACTER
With its relatively compact size, BAHJA would work beautifully beside a bed, in a cosy reading corner or as a small statement rug in a living room.
The dark base makes the brighter colours stand out, while the orange border adds a playful finishing touch.
A unique vintage find, selected for its colours, texture and wonderfully individual character.
