BAMILEKE BEADED HEAD - orange
A striking piece of African craftsmanship, handmade in Cameroon and inspired by the rich artistic traditions of the Bamileke people.
The entire sculpture is meticulously covered by hand with thousands of tiny glass beads. Warm shades of burnt orange and terracotta form the base, while contrasting red, pink and white beadwork accentuates the eyes, nose, mouth and ears.
Following the contours of the face, every row of beads is carefully placed by hand. The result is an expressive sculptural object in which colour, pattern and texture come together beautifully.
Traditionally, beadwork in Bamileke culture was much more than decoration. Beads were associated with prestige, status and identity, and elaborate beaded objects formed part of the rich visual language of the Bamileke kingdoms of Cameroon.
Today, these contemporary interpretations bring that extraordinary craftsmanship into the home. Display it as a standalone statement piece or combine several Bamileke heads in different sizes, colours and patterns for an eclectic collection.
As every head is made entirely by hand, no two pieces are exactly alike. Small variations and irregularities are part of its character and make each sculpture truly one of a kind.
