Meet LAYLA — a rug with two sides, two textures and a little identity crisis in the best possible way.

I found LAYLA through Saïd in Morocco as part of a small series of unusual rugs combining two traditional approaches to textile making.

Its foundation is a tightly handwoven kilim, worked in shades of pink, burgundy, black and cream. Across large sections of that base, strips of repurposed textiles have been knotted in Boucherouite style, creating a wonderfully tactile, shaggy surface.

The contrast is what makes this piece so interesting: flat and graphic in some areas, wild and textured in others. Turn it over and the woven construction reveals another side altogether.

Hot pink, faded rose, orange, burgundy, black and little flashes of cream run through the rug in wonderfully irregular bands. Look closely and you can see exactly how the textile strips have been worked into the woven base.

At 242 × 133 cm, LAYLA is a substantial one-of-a-kind rug with enough colour to make a statement without relying on a perfectly defined pattern.
