BOUCHEROUITE Rug – KARO | ca. 150 x 220
This is a one-of-a-kind handwoven Moroccan rug. Slight irregularities in shape, texture and weaving, along with loose fibres and signs of age, are part of its handmade character.
A little patchwork madness. In the best possible way.
Meet KARO, a wonderfully colourful vintage Moroccan Boucherouite rug that looks a little like a handmade mosaic.
Rows of irregular rectangles, each with their own combination of colours and textures. Deep navy blue, cobalt, bright orange, cherry red, bubblegum pink, soft mint, turquoise, mustard yellow and creamy white. Some patches are almost solid in colour, others mix several shades and fabrics together.
And the closer you look, the more interesting it gets.
What makes KARO particularly beautiful is the way its pattern changes across the rug. Larger, darker blocks gradually give way to smaller, brighter ones, creating a playful composition that feels surprisingly balanced despite all those colours.
A little about Boucherouite rugs
Boucherouite rugs are one of Morocco's most creative textile traditions.
Traditionally made from recycled fabrics and leftover textiles, they are wonderful examples of turning what is available into something entirely new.
Cotton, clothing remnants and other fabrics are cut into strips and worked into the rug by hand. The result is often a fascinating mixture of colours, materials and textures, with designs that can be wonderfully spontaneous and unpredictable.
Rather than following the more restrained patterns of traditional wool rugs, Boucherouites often have a much freer, more experimental character.
And KARO is a beautiful example of that.
Its patchwork composition almost feels like a collection of tiny woven artworks brought together in one piece.
On the floor? Absolutely. On the wall? Even better.
We particularly love KARO as a tapis tableau.
Its graphic composition and colourful blocks make it look almost like a piece of modern abstract art. Hang it vertically against a light wall, surrounded by books, vintage furniture, ceramics or little treasures collected on your travels.
Or use it as a statement rug in a living room, bedroom or creative space.
It's one of those pieces that can give an otherwise quiet room a completely different personality.
We found KARO during our October 2026 sourcing trip at the Marrakech rug auction and photographed it on the rooftop terrace of Riyad Lion Rouge, surrounded by sunshine and cacti.
