The basket that started SOUK in the CITY.
Our Berber baskets have been with us from the very beginning — colorful, wonderfully imperfect and each one completely its own.
Across Morocco, women make these baskets by hand in their homes, often as an additional source of income alongside everyday family life. Some work individually, others gather together to weave, talk and laugh while their hands do what they have learned to do for generations.
The base is made from thin strips of date palm leaves, softened in water and woven by hand. Colored wool is then stitched around the palm structure, slowly building the geometric patterns that make these baskets so recognizable.
And this is where the magic happens: there is no fixed pattern.
Each woman brings her own colors, combinations and way of working. Some designs are simple and graphic, others incredibly detailed. Sometimes a few baskets resemble each other, but no two are ever truly identical.
We source from many different women and makers across Morocco and personally select the pieces that feel SOUK in the CITY: the special ones, the unexpected color combinations, the slightly crazy ones and, always, the ones with character.
Traditionally used to store bread (khobz), today we love them as plant baskets, storage, bathroom baskets, kids’ room organizers or simply as a colorful piece of Moroccan craft.
